CRYSTAL AIR of Cleveland, Tennessee (KRZR) sponsored another Poker Run on the Fourth Saturday in March that included Dayton, Tennessee (K2A0) during their CAP breakfast. The other airports included the Knoxville Downtown Island Airport (KDKX), McMinn Co. (Athens KMMI), Collegedale (KFGU), and ended with lunch and awards at Cleveland (KRZR).
The weather was clear and warm and there was a large turnout. Airports were busier than ever, and still pilots were attempting to call for a straight in 5 mile final while others were calling their positions in the pattern. I appreciated having fellow chapter member Albert Robinson on lookout for other traffic.
With $950.00 in prize money, I know now there were at least 93 other pilots and crew sharing the same airspace, and we all strove to arrive in time for the mid day meal of grilled Hotdogs with chili or other fixings. CLEVELAND REGIONAL JET PORT is really trying to put their new airport on the map. They have hosted historical aviators giving programs to school children, and classes in Mountain Flying Technique given every two years. Add to that the Third Saturday CAP Breakfast and I find myself returning often.
